#Filemaker Server Disaster Preparedness

Wednesday, October 14, 2009
11:42 AM

Three things
  1. Make sure you have a big hard drive connected and time machine running to back up the server on OSX ; something equivalent in Windows
  2. Buy a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that is OSX compatible - it will come with a USB cable and OSX software that detects a power outage and shuts down the server before the batteruy runs out in 15-20 minutes - something equivalent in Windows
  3. Buy two thumb drives; copy the database to the Thumb drive once a week and take offsite to another area; swap out thumb drives once a week
  4. Optional - burn a CD of the database once a month and archive offsite

Thanks and good luck.

My Subscriptions - Posterous

Read all the Green news to make you and Mother Nature happy.

The government’s Cash for Clunkers program had Americans streaming in to local car dealerships over the summer as drivers looked to cash in on their rusty gas-guzzlers, but not everyone thought the program lived up to its green potential. Joe Doebele, owner of Portland’s Joe Bike, decided to put a Mother Earth-approved spin on the popular car trade-in program by offering a discount on new bikes to people who traded in their old bicycle or car. The “Bikes for Clunkers” program aimed to not only get polluting vehicles off the road, but get more cars off the road in general by encouraging people to ditch their four wheel habit in favor of two wheel one. Doebele also teamed up with the American Lung Association, which collects donated clunkers and provides customers with a receipt that can be used for a discount at Joe Bike.

Bikes for Clunkers was originally intended as only a month-long promotion, but, because of the program’s immense popularity, Doebele has decided to run it through the end of the year.

Adobe brings Photoshop.com to the iPhone

Adobe Systems on Friday introduced a new Photoshop app for iPhone users that lets them edit photos from both their phone and their online library on Photoshop.com.

The app is free of charge and offers tools such as cropping, image rotation, color controls, and simple one-touch filter effects that can change the look and feel of shots all at once. It also features undo and redo controls so that if users make a mistake, or want to revert back to the original, it takes just a few taps.

For most people, VLC is the favorite media player because it plays everything they throw at it without hiccups. No hunting for codec. But VLC can do a lot of other things as well. Find out how many of these listed below you knew, and how many you did not.

Intense flu shots

Kaiser was expecting crowds so the flu shots were delivered in tents by a large crew of pokers. Everybody needs one this year I would surmise.
