Macs in 12% of US households, majority also have Windows PCs

Mac ownership is up 33 percent over 2008 among US households, according to the latest NPD survey. Though at least twice as likely to have the latest consumer electronics gear, plenty of Mac users are also using Windows PCs as well.

The number of US households that own a Mac has increased to 12 percent. That's up from just 9 percent in 2008, according to the latest "Household Penetration Study" from market research firm NPD. The survey confirms recent trends that suggest Mac use is on the rise, though those sources don't always agree on the exact number. And, interestingly enough, 85 percent of Mac-using households also own Windows PCs.

          Most people start their day with a cup of coffee, a shower, a good stretch. Beth Akins rolls over, grabs her iPhone and fires up Shake & Spell, her favorite iPhone app game.

          "I usually play before I even get out of bed," says Akins, 54, of Louisville, who says a day without Shake & Spell leaves her with feelings of withdrawal. "I play every day."

          Apps is short for computer maker Apple's applications, and it refers to the scores of games and services that iPhone or iPod touch owners can download and interact with. There are 85,000 different apps for Akins and the other 50 million users around the world

I myself am trying to cut back - totally impossible to keep up with Apple Iphone apps. I used to love to look at new utilities for the Mac but my Phone cup runneth over. Overflow error - abort.

Arguably the worst book cover by a major publisher, ever:

Seriously, now, DAW, wtf? I know there’s a recession on, but there must be a better class of 12-year-old you can hire to push about the “liquefy” tool in Photoshop. I get that you were aiming for “chintzy, kooky fun” but you landed on “Fourth grade class project on Lulu.com,” and that just isn’t cool, and more to the point, you should know the difference. Were I an author in this particular anthology I would be sad I couldn’t show my friends the book I was in without them asking how much it cost me to publish it. I’m frightened to show it to graphic designers I know because I don’t want to be sued for damages when it causes blood to shoot from their ears. And as a reader, I can say the cover makes a really excellent argument for owning a Kindle.

Basically, I just look at this cover and don’t understand. I’m not entirely sure why this cover genuinely offends me a bit, but it does. I think it’s because it’s not unreasonable to hold major publishers to a higher standard than we would hold, say, some guy self-publishing from his basement. Hope the stories are good, at least.
